A 360° PTZ in a warehouse aisle helps nobody: the head spins while the forklift hits the racking.
The rule: PTZ = occasional, active tracking of a subject. Fixed = continuous coverage, 100% of the time, in a known zone [7][8].
DORI (IEC 62676-4:2025) makes it explicit [10][11][12]. A 4K bullet detects a person at ~150 m and identifies them at ~40 m. A 2MP PTZ with 32x zoom identifies at 220 m — but only when the operator points there [13]. At a fixed position, that PTZ has a ~2° FOV: looking through a straw while the scene moves on.
Where enterprise PTZ wins: 360° endless pan, 300–550°/s preset speed, 25x–32x zoom [1][2][3]. Three scenarios: the truck yard (200+ m perimeter, one device), LPR/ANPR at entry, live incident follow-up. It costs 3–5x what a comparable fixed bullet costs, with heavier mounting [4][5][6].
Where fixed wins: dock door, rack aisle, building face. Any zone where you want 100% continuous coverage without depending on an operator to move the camera. A PTZ running 4 presets on a tour spends 10 seconds in each zone, then loops [7][8]. A fixed camera covers one zone 100% of the time. In a 200,000 sq ft DC, the typical breakdown is 40–80 cameras with ~2 PTZ units in the yard as supplement [9][15].
Two hidden costs: Power — PTZ demands 802.3bt PoE++ (60–90W) or local 24 VAC; fixed runs on 802.3af (15.4W) or PoE+ (30W) [16][17]. Control latency — joystick → camera: 5–20 ms over RS-485, 30–80 ms over LAN, 150–500+ ms over WAN [18][19]. Over WAN, the operator moves and the camera arrives late.
Vendor landscape: Axis (Q63 series, Lightfinder 2.0), Hikvision (DarkFighter 25x, 0.005 lux color [3][14]), Hanwha (XNP-6321 32x, NDAA-compliant [22][23]) — three enterprise classes with comparable math. In the U.S., NDAA Section 889 / FAR 52.204-25 prohibits federal agencies from buying Hikvision/Dahua/Huawei/Hytera/ZTE equipment since August 2019 [20][21]. Mexico and LATAM don’t have a direct equivalent — but if you serve US clients, the NDAA filter becomes a procurement constraint.
Every DC layout I review for tv4agent comes back to the same question — not “PTZ or fixed” but where each goes and for which moment. A 300 m yard with two access gates: two PTZs. Twenty dock doors with seal and plate to read: twenty fixed. A rack aisle with forklifts running all day: a fixed bullet with WDR. If your distribution is the inverse, you’re paying a premium for motorized coverage of zones a fixed bullet would handle for a fraction of the cost.
P.D. How many cameras does your DC run today, and how many are PTZ? If the answer exceeds 3–5%, you’re likely paying motorized maintenance to cover zones a fixed bullet would handle better and cheaper.

Frequently asked questions
How many PTZ cameras do I need in a 5,000 m² DC? The correct answer is 2, no more. One PTZ covers the loading/unloading area (the 30 m around the dock), another covers the high-value picking zone (electronics, pharma, jewelry). Any additional PTZ is oversizing. The temptation is to put 5-6 PTZ to ‘cover everything’, but PTZs have an operational limitation: you can only look one direction at a time. The operator watching 6 PTZs ends up effectively watching 0.
How many fixed cameras? Depends on the operation. Practical rule: 1 fixed camera per 200-300 m² of critical zone (warehouse, picking, packing) + 1 per loading/unloading dock. For a 5,000 m² DC: 25-40 fixed cameras + 2 PTZ = 27-42 total. Most of my deployments land at 32 fixed + 2 PTZ = 34. That’s the cost/coverage sweet spot.
Is 4K worth investing in for a DC? Yes, in specific zones: (1) high-value picking zone (1.5-2× the cost of 1080p), (2) final packing zone, (3) exit dock. Not in general warehouse zones where fine detail doesn’t matter. 4K in 1 camera vs 4 1080p cameras with comparable analytics: 4K wins on facial identification at >5m, loses on wide coverage.
PTZ cameras with auto-tracking or manual? For a DC, manual. Auto-tracking generates more false positives than value: the operator ends up disabling the function. The best setup: PTZ with programmed presets (dock 1, dock 2, picking zone, loading zone) + operator rotates between presets every 30-60 seconds. Programmed rotation is 80% as effective as a dedicated operator at 20% of the cost.
What about analytics in a DC? Three that are worth it: (1) ‘person down’ (detects fallen person in warehouse — useful for zones with forklifts), (2) ‘intrusion detection’ in restricted zones (high-value camera, returns, narcotics zone if pharma), (3) ‘vehicle count’ at docks (counts trucks in/out). All three cost $300-600 USD/camera/year extra. Typical ROI: 6-12 months via incident reduction.
How much does the total project cost? For a 5,000 m² DC with 34 cameras + VMS + storage: CAPEX $80K-150K USD. Annual OPEX: 10-15% of CAPEX. 5-year TCO: $120K-220K USD. If your DC handles >$5M USD of inventory, the rule is 1-2% of inventory value in security — $50K-100K USD is the typical range. Below that, you’re underinsured. Above, you’re overinsured. The sweet spot for a mid-sized DC is $120K-180K USD total.
